June 2021

Texas, Truckee, Virginia Lakes, Sonoma, San Francisco.
June reminded us of how much variety California has to offer. We went biking around Tahoe, and spent lots of lake time given the warm weather - including an overnight canoe trip with some friends to the boat-in Emerald Bay campground - which was a total highlight!!! Lake Tahoe is so beautiful, and a day paddling from DL Bliss to Emerald Bay is a good reminder of that.
Of course we also spent some quality time at Virginia Lakes, including a day spend in hot springs, rock climbing and followed by a jump into an ice cold alpine lake. We spent a week in San Francisco playing tourists also. The highlight for me was going to Alcatraz (which I had never done!). The kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience (they call jail "the trap", which is hilarious.. and they loved the story of the 1962 escape). During the week, while I worked, Melissa took the kids to the zoo, Academy of Sciences, and did other city things.
The kids also tried their hand at entrepreneurship - by running a lemonade stand in our neighborhood! They made $56, and the coolest part was that a neighbor (that we did not know!) gave them $100 - with the instructions to keep $10 of it, and donate the other $90 to someone who really needs it (they decided to donate it to orangutan and elephant orphanages, with donation a match by us). For some reason, weeks later, that still stands out as a highlight of the month. Thank you, whoever you were, for reminding us of how awesome humans can be.
