Red Rocks weekend
December 5-6, 2009
Last minute trip to Vegas to see Dow & Stacy and meet up with
Melissa who was there for a conference. On Saturday, Dow and I were hoping
to do a longer climb on Windy Peak. Sadly the roads are pretty rough and I
had rented a Mustang for some reason... after scraping it a bit, and then
getting it stuck in some sand (rear wheel drive), we extracted it and
thought better of continuing... plan B was the 13-mile loop, a road that
the rental car could make it on. Note to self: when the rental agency
offers you a $5 upgrade from a Kia that you got dirt cheap via priceline
next time, try to go for the Escalade, not the Mustang. :)
We started with Beulah's Book and continued on to
Sunflower,
an awesome combination given the high of 40 degrees F. It was
great fun, and we actually had sun for the second part of the day
after the clouds lifted!
On Sunday, all 4 of us went sport climbing in the sun. It was 35
degrees in the parking lot at 10:30am, not particularly inviting!
Thankfully, the sun made it OK and maybe it warmed up a by a few
degrees too. Melissa did her first lead, with no fuss! There was a big
snowstorm forecast for the evening & following week, and at 4pm some
mean-looking clouds started rolling in... time to go home! Great weekend
climbing and hanging out with some awesome friends!
